Gary and Mary West were awarded the distinguished 2015 Herb Klein Civic Leadership Award last night by the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (EDC). Named for former San Diego Union-Tribune Publisher and civic icon Herb Klein, this prestigious award honors business and community leaders who have made significant contributions to improving our region.
Mr. West graciously accepted the award on behalf of West Health, the Foundation and all of their grantees saying, “Their hard work and dedication make everything we do possible. This is their award—and Mary and I are very proud to accept it on their behalf.”
The Wests were recognized for their leadership and generous outcome-oriented philanthropy through the efforts of the Foundation and West Health at the event celebrating the EDC’s 50th year and attracting more than 900 San Diego business leaders. In particular, the award focused on Gary and Mary’s tremendous support of our region’s scientific advancements and medical research innovations, improving the quality of lives of thousands of seniors and supporting returning veterans – all of which have proven invaluable to our community and its citizens.
In his remarks, Mr. West underscored his and Mary’s dedication to making successful aging a reality for seniors and their loved ones so they can live high-quality, engaged lives with choice, dignity and independence. He urged the influential attendees to consider the nation’s growing senior population as they lead their respective businesses saying, “Every eight seconds someone turns 65…think about the healthcare needs of our aging population: your parents, your grandparents, and, someday, yourself. How can we improve lives and achieve the best health outcomes for a fraction of the current cost? San Diego has the opportunity to become a ‘model city’ where seniors age successfully in their homes. We can become the ‘gold standard’ by which all other cities are measured,” Mr. West said.
